Today's offering intrigued me as it is focused on the young protagonist seeking to place herself in between her African American heritage and that of her schooling in Judaism from her mother's side. I had a look at the
Oheb Shalom Congregation and found that they are a progressive group, encouraging female participation in the traditional learnings usually reserved for men... which is why Birdie is having a Bar Mitzvah and not a Bat Mitzvah... (and was tickled when I discovered their address in South Orange, NJ, is on Scotland Road!) It's never easy being a teenager but wrangling with cultural identity and a missing father as well...
