Menonday Art Vibe; The Portraits Series

The previous two weeks and this one are all from the temporary exhibition at the NPG, which focused on the earlier part of life for James VI and I. (There will be one other item from that exhibit next week, which is not exactly a portrait...)

This one is by the same artist who did the two in the first week of this series... It was much smaller (about one-third the wall-space of the prince and princess pieces). When you read the history, you will come to understand the more dour clothing, although there is still the exquisite attention to lace and jewellery details. Also, I love how this artist didn't succumb to the totally anodyne expressions so often found on paintings of the period. No Filter Here! Recall how the princess had a slightly haunted look... here, the lady looks at us as if from (an as yet unknown) photograph. We have a clear sense of her character from her eyes and the shape of her face, mouth, and chin, and from the fact that she has her pet with her. I like her!

  1. That's a tragic story. How one person's craze for power destroys another.

  3. I like this portrait, too...and the little doggy looks like a dsrling. I think she looks rather sad, and when I read the story below the portrait, I can understand why. Poor lady.

Good question: as the King Charles Cavalier was not yet in existence, it would not be that. However, it could very well be one of the original toy spaniel-types that arrived from the Orient and became favoured by royalty. It was the later king Charles who loved them so much and became involved in their breeding that his name became attached - and later again that the Cavalier was developed. Yxx

  6. Now I know why she looks so sad. Her dress is so pretty and her jewels are beautifully done.

  7. this is a beautiful painting and my eyes went right to the bling on her dress, the sparkles caught my eye. She does look more realistic than the other two. only HUMANS are cruel, God's critters only kill for food, they are not cruel. I am surprised they let someone paint her, and wonder if it was while she was incarcerated. her hands are so thin they hurt my heart

  8. Aren’t you glad you don’t have to dress like that?

  9. Lady Arabella and her darlin' pup I'm so sorry she had such a sad ending.
OMDs x 87 I cannot wear anything that tight around my neck. I would start to feel very suffocated
