Menovakancery; A Bit of Nothing Much

17 days left of 2022. Crikey. Or should that be Quacky?

I may have gone AWOL on comments the other day... I realised I had to get some festive greetings out to those who matter, so I concentrated on that. I don't love you any less.

Nothing has been done about upgrading the Nobbified beanie yet because it is far too warm and keeping it on the head is more important. I do have other beanies. Get yourself in gear, Yamini.

The LynGmal has been pressed into service this week as the temps plummet; finally getting white stuff around the Hutch, but not snow. Hoar frost. All the pretty without too much messy. I'd share a photo, but I still need to take it. I am actually enjoying these cooler temps. They may be largely responsible for flicking the festive switch in my head and causing the panic realisation of where we are on the calendar.

Also, the current clear skies allowed me to view some of the Geminid meteors these past few nights.

The 14th of December was my maternal granny's birthday (the one I am a clone of); it was the day my parents got engaged, and, this year, it was the night I counted 36 meteors. I like the number 36. Perhaps because some of my happiest years were spent in a house with that street number. Perhaps because any number equalling nine vibes with me. Who knows? Who cares?

Oh, in case you were trying to work that out, I was watching on what you might call the night of the 13th, but it was actually the wee scrawny hours, so it was officially the 14th. If I see more after finishing this post (because you know me, I am scheduling this on Wednesday evening...) I will add to the comments! You can still see meteors up till the 20th; just these two nights are optimum for viewing.

What else can I bore you with? Oh yes, this was an interesting ten or eleven minutes of infotainment.

A few folks I know are keen on soccer, that round-ball football malarkey. I enjoy most sports but try as I will, I just cannot work up enthusiasm for this one. However, there is no denying that the World Cup works a little like the Olympics in creating a festival atmosphere and - for a while - breaks down barriers. I have enjoyed watching my vlogpals, Snow and Curt, learn about the game RIGHT THERE IN BUENOS AIRES! Yup. When they arrived there last month, they had no idea what was ahead of them. Now they are totally on the wagon with the entirety of the city... and this video from the semifinal is worth watching for the momentous feeling of unity and zeal. (They are in an apartment because the other big event in their van life journey is that Snow has heart failure. She has received excellent (and comparatively cheap) treatment at the Italian Hospital in BA and three stents, and on-body defib later, she is doing well.)

Back to my Christmas letter list. I downloaded a plug-in for Gmail that provides fancy templates for writing emails. There's a bit of a learning curve, but I like it. There are many different extras for Gmail at CloudHQ if you are interested.

While thinking geek stuff, I have noticed that the spamming of comments has reduced considerably but still remains and is very random, as now comments from as long back as eight years occasionally turn up. It is also a frustration to me that where once I was able to respond directly to some commenters via email, if I want to do that now, I have to make a manual effort, as the link has somehow dropped. Also, there are two or three commenters I only know have visited if I go back and physically read posts because, for mysterious gremlinous reasons, they have dropped off the 'notify blog owner' list. That and the occasional missed post because of tardy publication to the reader makes for a slightly teeth-grinding YAMster. Sigh... just know I will catch up eventually.

  3. Nobby and I are pleased to read that you are keeping your head warm! We are still enjoying the snow and also cuddling up together in the evenings to watch the World Cup. We'll later will take a peek at the vlog from Bueno Aires.

  4. No football in our house. One film per night when Mr B is at home (Startrek lately for some reason), and just supervising F doing knitting if he is away. Last night we watched a program about events in Iran. Where does the time go F wonders.....

  6. Definitely quacky! Very little sport watching goes on here unless it's the Olympics. I thought about making a mug cozy - cast on - knit a few rows and lost interest. Oh well.

  7. YAM wearing your Nobbified beanie means you will have him with you all the time and I know he will share some WFT thoughts. The 14th was a special day.

  8. Don't worry about visitations to those, like me, living life on her blogs. You just do the best for you. There are too many media messages about making this season easy. It isn't easy. We have nothing planned and nothing else to do. We won't see Caitlin and crew until Boxing Day. Her MIL is there, again, this year. It is discouraging. I am trying to keep a smile on my face. I am looking forward to soccer. I'll have to get up early to shovel tomorrow. Again!

  9. Hee! Hee! We used to try to back-up and comment on what we missed, but with a 2 week hiatus, and having read the posts at the time, I have choosen not to. I was hoping we would have some clear nights so we could see the Geminids, but alas, we bave had heavy valley fog during the evenings and nights. We are expected to have clear nights mid-week but that also means that the extreme cold front will be sitting over us and outside at -25 is NOT optimal for veiwing (my glasses fog up). Sigh. I would like a "normal" winter...it seems so long since we had one.
