Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms
We arrive at the final music offering from the wee island of Saint Lucia. Well, confession, I've wandered a tad further to the isles of Trinidad and Tobago. This was just too much fun to not include... and it's only fair to include this offering, as Soca style actually developed out of T'n'T. While the Ska and Reggae rhythms populated the northern Caribbean, it was Calypso and Soca that saturated the southern isles. Tobago is the small teardrop of an island to the northeast of Trinidad, and Machel, the artist today, hails from there. In this live performance from Soca 2024, he honours all the history of the musical style, naming several of the revered performers ... and being surprised by two of the named masters. It's just plain carnival!
I love Machel's mortarboard!

ReplyDeleteWhile still gainfully employed at NCSU we had a delightful Post Doc from Trinidad. I learned so much about her country and culture and foods. We used to have an annual pot luck meal around the holidays everyone brought a dish from their part of the world.
