By stating 'agriculturist' in the title, Smith was advertising the status of the subject at the time of completion (Hay being highly regarded in his approach to advancing farming and husbandry). However, as can be clearly seen, Raeburn set out to convey the person of Hay in his Field Marshal status, for he was a soldier of some repute, becoming governor of Madras and the Indian Army.
