What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Menoffagainorrhea [me-noff-again-or-rhea]; the condition of the endless traveller

The trip North was most enjoyable.  There was a spell of gloomy cloud cover for an hour or two, but mostly it was bright and quite clear.  I had the 'Nik' on my lap and took lots of shots on the run.  Some of them were half way decent.

The rolling hills of Derbyshire over yonder...  (the standard goes down from here...)

Several wind farms were observed along our way.  Some had only two or three windmills, others had dozens. I have heard that folks often object to the presence of these.  Once this was the case with electrical pylons. Everyone wants power though. I would much rather have these than the nuclear alternative...  I think they are rather elegant.

There was the obligatory pit-stop at Scotch Corner. An old family favourite this place, from when we used to have to travel for the annual summer holiday from Suffolk to the Scottish Borders.  The parents, tired of the 'are we there yet' would let us out to 'de-steam' and off we'd go again.  This chedder and sun-dried tomato toastie and cuppa choccky was welcome I must say!

A landmark which has emerged long after I ever did this journey, is the Angel of the North.  Unfortunately, it comes upon the unsuspecting traveller all too quickly and disappears equally so... so that I got even this good a shot through the windscreen is pleasing!  The next thing that was a bit elusive was Holy Island.

The light was fast fading.  The first attempt through the driver's window (sorry about the smears!), was passable. This was such an exciting and rather haunting feature, though, Mac2 took the time to stop so that I could get several goes at it.  This was one of the better ones.

There was an absolute flasher of a sunset, but no more stopping, so many an opportunity was lost.

This one through the car mirror was possibly the best!!

We continued rushing on and, pretty much as darkness fell (4pm!), we crossed the border. At such pace, you'll forgive the look of this...

FINALLY!!! (That wasn't a global gasp I just heard was it???)

We arrived at Mac2's Edinburgh 'pad' by 5:15pm and father was there to meet us.

So begins the next chapter in the book of YAM.

  2. Thank you for the link to the Angel of the North; I had no concept of its vast presence. Rather like the windmills, do you think?

  3. I agree about the wind farms. When we traveled across the USA, we saw many of them, and I too thought they were elegant and majestic! Great photos!

  4. Great photos even through the car window. We have lots of wind farms in our area and I love to see them.

  5. I love the photos of a journey DH and I know quite well. :-) Glad to hear you aren't anti-windfarm. I'm sometimes hesitant to say that I too prefer them to a nuclear power station.

  6. Great pictures, when we go north to visit my cousins Jenny and Helen we know we are nearly there when the Angel of the North comes into sight.

Having lived so near Sizewell Nuclear Power station most my life and then seeing all the wind farms off Felixstowe I am in two minds about them both, but they are something we need to give us the electricity we demand.

Thank you all!! It was certainly an enjoyable trip, filled with nostalgia. Re the windmills; no doubt mass, cheap power availability is going to mean making compromises in one form or another. It is inevitable. I do strongly feel wind, water and solar power is the way to go...

    Have a great weekend everyone!
