What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Menoducational: some interesting things.

Starting off the year with some not so good news reporting... spotted this one over at gCaptain. Check that link for the foul full picture

A Staggering Amount of Plastic is Floating in the World’s Oceans,
New Study Shows

The study estimates at least 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing 268,940 tons are currently floating at sea. Photo: Shutterstock/Rich Carey

Horrific, isn't it?  I am sure that many of you would have heard about the garbage dump that is being created in our waters. This could be one of those things which can overwhelm our greater conscience and sometimes there can be the sense of 'what can I do about it?'

In our western society there are certainly attempts to make a difference - but there is sooooo much more to do. Scotland recently took the plunge and made it law that all plastic bags are chargeable, enforcing reuse. It has a long way to go in the recycling field though.

At a personal level, we can all endeavour to use less plastic. It's a challenge! Here, though, is the chance of a resolution for 2015. At the YAMster's, plastic is minimal anyway - but less can still happen. Making my own curd rather than buying cartons all the time...buying loose fruit and veg rather than the pre-packed stuff...simply being aware and making better choices.  This does sometimes mean a little more expense, because for all sorts of reasons stuff in plastic tends to the more economic end of the purchasing chain.

So be it.

I decided to look around for something else which carried the message forward (without getting overly depressing!) and, as so often happens, found just the thing.  It is three years old now, but still a good little talk. In some respects the idea is not a new one at all, of course; however the important thing is the emphasis on personal responsibility and conscious action. (Note especially, of mention of the Big M...)

  1. In Canada we have to pay for plastic bags too. We are too reliant on plastic aren't we?

  3. TED talks are wonderful! We banned plastic bags awhile back. It's a habit to keep cloth bags in the car. I fold up a couple and have them in my purse. Yes, I'd seen this awful story. It's terrible. Mind you, there is much debris from things like the Tsunami, and other disasters. Happy New Year to you and yours! It's been quite the year for many of us. I have so enjoyed your trials and tribulations as you resettled in Scotland. You are an amazing person.

  4. Crikey Aunty ...... all the Peeps need reminding, aye?? ALL THE TIME!! You peeps sure make a big mess of our planet. Mum gets real annoyed at people just throwing their garbage everywhere. She always carries a big PLASTIC (recyclable of course but plastic, non the less) bag with her when we go to the beach or the bush for walks and picks up any rubbish she finds. Even cigarette butts. It's not much help but I guess it's better than nothing, aye?? It never ceases to amaze her what people leave behind on the beach when there is a garbage bin not that far away. If you can carry it to the beach or anywhere else for that matter why can't you carry it to the bin??? Crikey she'd go on and on about this for hours. It's a pet hate!!! Must get her to change to a paper bag, aye??
