A CD which rests on my shelves and gets rather less airing than it deserves is the Daniel Barenboim/ Jacqueline du Pre recording of Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor. A sweeping, highly emotive piece of work. Allow me to share the Adagio with you today.

ReplyDeleteA piece one never tires of hearing. It strikes me how relatively 'ungroomed' Jacquline du Pre was, when compared to the glossy looks of most of today's female classical musicians. Less pressure in those days to conform to a certain image?

DeleteHmmm - possibly, but I recall even at that time reading of her 'bohemian' tendencies, which were not actually part of the established classical music circles.... indeed, there were many who thought her playing was equally audacious and she did tend to split the crowd a bit.... much as Nigel Kennedy did a generation later! However, I think that is why Elgar was the perfect composer for her; Bach requires much more the sleek and polished type you mention!!! Happy Sunday to you and Bertie... Yxx

DeleteThis is very very true mon ami!!! Though it has to be admitted that here today, the wind is little more than a whisper; but since yesterday the leaves at the top of the trees have dropped, and it is certainly grey and I am covered to the eyeballs in woolen blanket!!! Hot Chocolate anyone? Yxx
