Menotripsical; BAR and Beyond - Nati Tuesday pt 2

June 14th - the other half!

Are you getting the hang of just how much we covered in so little time??? Lee and Janet were phenomenal hosts! The big place we went to see next was, in fact, the only one place I had said for definite I would like to see as it epitomises Art Deco... the Union Station building. When we arrived, there was a lady outside having a fag (draw on a smoking tube), which I have to be honest racked the lungs a bit; however, she was admiring how Lee and I were dressed (matching colours - pure fluke) and then turned out to be a guide and offered us some good info on the building. I learned that it was a full half-dome construction and the lady then asked if Sydney Opera house was that; at the time I was stuck to recall the correct info, and it came too late to tell her that, no, it is of abutted shell construction. I was so looking forward to going inside.

...but woooooooooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh... was not prepared for the vertigo to kick in!!! I can get the spins just looking up a tall building the wrong way, or turning too fast on the spot (seriously affected my ballet career, that), so the very upwards and very circular and very linear interior immediately had me toppling. Swallowed hard and managed a dodgy 180 panorama shot. Short visit. The external parts were every bit as decorative though. Go on, biggify this one and see what ya think...

From here we headed up to the Rookwood , the old pottery - which is no longer a working kilnhouse, but a restaurant. Again I was to be impressed with the level of service and adaptability. There was a great display of ceramics from the kilns and I learned the area known as Over The Rhine is called that because German settlers brought Rhine vines with them and set up vineyards. Seems obvious really. Anyhoo; we had a fabby meal once again...and we could see Union from the hill!

Then it was out and about again in the car. The area of Mt Adams is one of the oldest in Nati City and the homes are very close together with no parking on offer. Which meant, when Lee wanted to show me the Immaculata steps and look out, Janet was left going in circles! Bless her. From the lookout point on top of the steps we could see lots - at last. Not least the Dolly Partons (remember them?)

There was another mural and, last but by no means the least, our unexpected little drop-in to the church itself... go back to yesterday's post if you didn't already see the effect that had.

One thing which kept cropping up, as it is such a landmark, was SWTS's water tower.
All attempts to photograph it were thwarted and even when, at the last run home that Tuesday evening, Janet pulled into a car park and stopped so I could have a go at it, things were not that successful because by now the rain was drizzling and the sky was glary, making the tower totally nondescript.

Not to be outdone, however, a little fiddly-diddly in the software brought out the glorious relief of the concrete tube.

Another evening on the porch and a not so late night. One morning to go...

  3. The murals in Union Terminal are pieces roughly the size of a nickel and were positioned and trimmed individually to achieve the desired appearance. The murals are silhouette mosaics, which mean the main elements of the murals are fully done in tesserae, but that the backgrounds are colored plaster. That is why they just pop.
I had hope to show you the mural made out of linoleum.
Here is a site http://www.cincymuseum.org/union-terminal/art ~ number 14 is the linoleum one.
