What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Menotripsical; BAR and Beyond - Onwards and Upwards. Literally.

June 21st saw me on the road again... or in the air, to be fair.

Yup. Canada was now on the radar. I had a couple of hours to spend at Cleveland airport. Located a food outlet where I could get some toasted cheese and salad ... and a root beer of course. Located a general outlet where I purchased my Ohio tee-shirt and a sticker. Packable.

Located the gate. Not difficult - quite a compact airport, is Cleveland Hopkins (CLE). There was no direct flight to Ottawa. Flying across the border at all was virtually a last-minute decision before leaving on the big trip. Had been trying to do the trip by rail - but that got thwarted when couldn't get a straight-through connection; it was more expensive anyway and it would have involved a hotel overnight in Toronto. Way beyond time budget, never mind the $$.

Air Canada it was then. Except it wasn't really. It was Air Georgian - a private contractor flying 'partner' bearing the livery of AC. It wasn't quite pink string and sealing wax and bring your own wings. It was close though.

This became very apparent when we started our descent into Toronto. The cross-wind was fierce. We were like a cork on the open ocean. I was busy looking out the window attempting to capture the CN Tower with the Fudge. There was so much shake, rattle and roll, the challenge was even greater than usual. I am a hardy flyer. I love it. Even the turbulence. This stuff even had me wondering as we got closer and closer to the ground, however, experience grumbling at me that this wasn't gonna be a good idea, and why wasn't the pilot pulling out of it?

A few seconds after that thought - at somewhere between 100 and 200 feet, and closer to the lower than the higher - he did. He had to pull out so hard it was as strenuous as a take off. "Well that was fun" thought I, still fixed on the outside view.

Around we went and had another go. Still bumpy, but nowhere near as bad. Tarmac at last. Only then did I realise the air attendant was doing attending - to the fellow sitting right beside me. We were on the front row. He was a body-shaped liquid lump, spewing his guts into as many bags as she could provide and water springing from every pore like the Ganges does from the Himalayas. Truly I have never seen anyone that colour and that watery manage to stand up and walk. Which he did the minute the belts were off. The attendant couldn't open the door fast enough for him. Poor bloke. He was to connect on a flight to Turkey. Good luck with that one.

Perth. J&J's place is somewhere close to top right of centre of this shot.
Two hour stop-over in Toronto and onto another jet, somewhat larger this time and considerably more stable. Up over Rideau lakes country, spotting Perth, safely into Ottawa. There I was met by blogpal Jenn Jilks and her hubby Joe. There were huge hugs and lots of excited chatter - we had been hanging out for this meeting! Joe wasn't daunted by these two giggling old lassies - he could hold his own and over the two (very) short days we had together, I grew to love his conversation every bit as much as Jenn's.

More on Wednesday...

  1. I don't do well with turbulence myself - poor guy - at least that has never happened. Glad you landed safely in Canada!
The Man and I are seriously considering Scotland as part of our 2018 big trip (we are aiming for big trips every other year and little trips in between). We will keep you posted!

  3. Our mom is not a fan of flights like that one! She wouldn't expect to be spewing body fluids but she might be praying the Rosary (and she isn't Catholic) BOL!

Glad you found the pleasure in it!

  7. GOOD GRIEF YaYa...I got a little queasy reading about all that rock n rollin'.
I have never been air sick and normally rides at amusement parks don't bother me BUT hearing that poor guy being so sick would HAVE FOR sure triggered my gag reflex and I would have been a goner too. I feel bad for him as I know he was mortified.
I tell you YaYa you are a SEASONED traveler

  11. Oops! Did the pilot come back and rearrange the passengers to 'balance the cabin weight' before take off? Did the attendant ask for help closing the cabin steps? Did the air conditioner quit working half way through the flight? Have experienced all of those but never a seat neighbor getting terribly ill. So glad you nade it safely! janice xx
