WYSIWYG

What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Menolyrical; Words for Words' Sake

As has previously been mentioned, I took part in prompts provided by Debbie at My Random Musings during the craziness that was April. For the most part, I simply wrote down in the comments whatever rolled from under my fingers. The truest of flash fiction responses. No over-thinking it, no over-editing - barely even tweaking for punctuation. This is something to practice and one does improve at it.

Another blogger wrote a post recently that debated editing and concluded that nothing should escape it. Generally, I would agree. For these short prompts, though, I think the discipline of thinking clearly and getting down that thought flow holds as much merit as a piece which has been worked and worried over for hours or days.

Sure, polishing might bring out more of a diamond than a quartz, but there is something to be said for pure spontaneity. Providing, of course, that it is not also pure drivel...

A few of my responses to Debbie's prompts are going to appear here over the next few weeks, simply copied and left as they were, resisting the temptation to change from the original spontaneous outburst. For this one on "W" the prompts were;
"Your character has three wishes. What do they wish for and why? Do they choose materialistic things or less tangible things? Do they choose things for themselves or others?
What do their choices reveal about their motivations and personality?"
Willow wished to be wealthy,
then she wished it was worldwide
then she wished to be healthy
and watched the world balance with pride
Her wishes had worked so well
as her own and the world’s coffers rose
then one day the wishes they fell
as all need for striving it froze
For where was now the purpose
each morning for mankind to rise?
Now Willow wished for some recourse
and that she’d wished instead to be wise.

You are invited to provide your own spontaneous responses to the prompts in the comments below....OR... you could use it as a prompt for next week's Final Friday Fiction - yes it's that time already!!!

  1. I never read all the ends and outs of The A-Z challenge and I think I might need to read them to fully understand what it was about. The name Willow has always conjured up the most peaceful images in my mind's eye. I'm sure do mostly to the Lovely graceful weeping willow trees we have around here. Their dances in the breezes are so pretty just like your artsy butterfly.

  4. I enjoy your writing! There is value in timed writing, as well. I used to teach writing that way. Just write, don't edit, let it flow!
