Menoctoberish - a month of festivals

Continuing (in a non-contiguous manner) the overview of Navratri. Why is this being done, again? This is the month of festivals everywhere and decided to use the ones I celebrate to lead up to a post suitable for Spooky Day. You see after this will come a cut-down version of the Ramayana. It is technically celebrated in the same time period but as both events culminate in a tenth day of battle and victory, the plan is to bring them together on the 31st. Anyhu, moving right along...

Let us now look at Panchami - the fifth day - on which yellow is worn and we celebrate Skandamata-ji.

The name of this incarnation of Durga-maa literally means 'mother of Skanda' and she is depicted carrying her son. Skanda (aka Kartikeya or Murugan), who is the brother of Shri Ganesha, grew up to become the commander in chief of the gods, a talented strategist and able tactician. In worshipping Skandamata we are also worshipping this god. The boon from this is clarity of focus, improved intellect, courage and self-worth.

On the more subtle level, the requirement of feminine power to generate the masculine is addressed here; the importance of the role of the mother is always to be appreciated and honoured.
