Here we come to the last of Advent and today, a full precented rendition of verses 18 and 19 of Psalm 72. I have heard this style of chant being referred to as being like the rush and pull of the Atlantic ocean against the island shores, but I also think there is a calm and shine such as can be found on the stilled lochs and colourful braes... as illustrated in the accompanying images here. One commenter remarked, "it would bring a tear tae a gless eye". If one lets the sound enter one's being, it certainly would. Another put, "I am not a Christian nor a Gael but if anyone can tell me of a more hauntingly beautiful sound on this earth I am all ears." Well perhaps there are other beautiful sounds, but this is up there among the best. (For the keen, words are below.)
Beannaicht' gu robh an Tighearn' Dia,
Dia Israeil a ghnàth,
An ti a mhàin 'ni mìorbhuile
le treis 'us neart a làimh.
Beannaicht' gu robh gu sìorruidh buan
'ainm glòrmhor uasal féin ;
Lìonadh a ghlòir gach uile thir,
Amen, agus Amen !
(thanks to 'Bevsfan' for supplying the Gaelic)
18 Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
Dearest YAM Aunty
