Last Thursday, the real chronicles of the Great Down Under Parts trip began. Now you find the YAMster and cuzzy D settled into the wee cottage on the gated estate in the suburb of Urrbrae where cousin Sally is now residing. There is lots to commend the gated estate lifestyle. Then there is the ever-present Stepford Wives sensation. Jus' sayin'.
Sally is a keen creator of various things; currently that is feltwork and a fine job she does of it too. (Note the vase cover.) She is also determined that any guests must not sit at home, but be ootted and abootted. On the Wednesday morning, then, we piled into her car and headed firstly up the hills to meet with cousins Marc and Marion (M&M) to view their plot of land and preparations for the building of their new home. I had not met either of these people until now. They are jolly and warm and we got on well. After the visit, Sally drove D and me into the city to have lunch at the art gallery and then a viewing of what was there. Lots of good stuff, but particularly the show of Ben Quilty works. Fandabadoozy. Most of the other rooms were equally entrancing, but by far the captivating one for Soffee Mouse and myself was the red room.
As tomorrow is 'views' day, will keep the rest for then - these are just a taster. The story of the lifejackets; Ben was affected by the fate of refugees who found themselves on useless boats who had been handed these jackets with a level of hope attached. It turned out that in this particular case, the jackets were filled with an absorbent material rather than bouyant and many drowned...
See you tomorrow!

It seems to me a particularly vile crime to profit (as someone presumably did) from providing worse than useless lifejackets and boats to desperate refugees. I find it impossible to take anything positive from such a story. Just terrible.

DeleteCouldn't agree more, Gail, and Ben had succeeded astoundingly well in conveying this travesty through colour and form. The sensation in that room as we studied the series was definitely sombre. Ben served as war artist in Afghanistan also and many of his portraits are of the effects upon servicemen and women. Worth looking up,.. Yxx
Now that busy.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
Your words convey to us that you are having a jolly good time:)
ReplyDeleteWoos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber
Looks like a fun and busy time.
ReplyDeleteI totally love the idea of a vase cover.... I often have a vase what fits to the flowers but not for the event or the season... and such a cover is the bestest solution!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun time! Love the vase cover!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics.
ReplyDeleteI loved the thought of the 3 of you in the Wee Cottage behind the gates... sounds like fun times with your cousins.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you sure are keeping busy. We hope you get some down time too. What a sad story about those life vests.
ReplyDeleteYou are having a wonderful time. I'm enjoying it, too! I sat with my client today. It wasn't too bad.
