What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

MenoSundays; Life Lived Lovingly

Are we all feeling a bit weary, a bit walled-in... maybe a tad stir-crazy?

As somebody who relishes solitude, I have to acknowledge it has always been by my own choosing. Quite different when enforced, is it not?

One of my go-to chants when feeling like this is the Mahaa MRtyunjaya Mantra. I have provided this on the sidebar to cover the time through to the end of May. 108 repetitions is considered the most auspicious. But what is being said or asked?

Om Tryambakam Yajaamahe
Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvaarukamiva Bandhanaan
Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat
  • aum = is a sacred syllable in Sanatan Dharma.
  • tryambakam = the three-eyed one
  • yajāmahe = We adore, honor and worship.
  • sugandhim = sweet fragrance.
  • puṣṭi = A fullness of life.
  • vardhanam = One who nourishes and strengthens health and wealth.
  • puṣṭi+vardhanam = The one who nourishes others and ensures their fullness.
  • urvārukam-iva = like the cucumber or melon or a big peach.
  • bandhanān = “from captivity”.
  • mṛtyormukṣīya = Free, liberate From death.
  • mā’mṛtāt = immortality.

This prayer is a recitation of names to Lord Shiva and is believed to overcome death to nourish and nurture human beings from all illness and diseases. It would, therefore, seem to be the chant of choice for everyone right now, would you not agree?

Listening to this in full each morning will bring a calm and - maybe - add to the universal healing we all need right now.

  1. YAM I love to read...but what I chose...and I enjoy being at home but not being told to do so.
BUT anything you are told you have to do causes one's rebellious teenager to surface.

  2. I think I am one of the few people who is very happy being told to stay home. If only I could get the black dog not to need to get up at sunrise.

  3. Molly and I are home by ourselves pretty much always so these restrictions are nothing earth shattering to us.

  4. we are used to being home, but not used to missing our routine that takes us out of the house every morning... we are a little bore than a TAD over being locked down, but will continue to do so. it really has changed our perspective on our lives.

  5. Quite familiar with Maha Mrutyunjaya Mantra, though I don't know to recite it. But it's extremely calming to listen to it.

  9. Late last year, when we were going through a hiccup as a family, a friend suggested that we recite the mahamrityunjaya. I was new to it but repeated chanting helped me remember the words and now we chant this mantra at least once a day--especially since the lockdown.
I prefer the song version of it sung by Shanker Sahni as it's easier for me to recite it as a song.
