There are, of course, many historical pictures from my 28 years down under... Here is a little collection I put together in October 2013;
The Australian Pelican, with it's sea-blue waders, is an ubiquitous sight on any shore - but particularly where there is hope of feeding. Just behind me there is a frenzy of fish-gutting going on as the weekend sailors show off their catch. This was one out of maybe two dozen pelicans and uncountable numbers of gulls!
The "Granny's Cloak Moth" below almost merged with my wall hanging! It is approximately four inches from wing tip to wing tip.
Of course there had to be a couple of marsupials included! This is an Eastern Grey Kangaroo - cousin to the Western mentioned in Sunday's post. And a koala...
Finally, the Dingo. Dogs which have an ancient connection with the INDog (Indian Native Pariah species). The keeper made it clear that though he had known these two since pups, he still did not trust them. This open-air sanctuary allows them to live as naturally as possible, whilst keeping them protected and fed, in order to educate and maintain full bloodline - as with INDogs, a lot of cross breeding with feral European breeds is now taking place.

What a great range of creatures. Bertie's favourite is of course the dingo, and I admit he is a handsome fellow, but I am torn between the moth and the shy koala!
ReplyDeleteCheers, Gail.
Oh, we love that cloth moth. Mom hopes life will be back to normal in early August so she can take the grands to the big butterfly show in Missouri at Powell Gardens. It was so much fun looking at all the different moths and butterflies they had there a few years ago.
