Menofestivalery; Bouncing Ballet

Well, my dears, there is no escaping the fact that the festive season is upon us. Be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule or just Humanity that you celebrate, there is room for escapism, magic, mystery, mirth and motion. All of these and more I have found in the Scottish Ballet's first-ever "feature film", called The Secret Theatre.

Even if you are not a great fan of dance, I think if you like drama and film at all, you will enjoy this little tale of a boy who enters a deserted theatre to discover a world of imagination... or is it?

To say I have been enchanted by this would be an understatement. I watched it a third time just prior to setting this post - and will watch it again on Christmas Eve. I have always loved ballet (and yes, I had classes in my youth - then puberty hit...) I would certainly have been attending a show in the theatre had the times and events this year not ensured the impossibility of that. SB recognised the need and set about doing something unique for them - getting the show filmed. The result is all the wonderment of the stage-work but added little features only film could provide, such as personal interactions between dancer and audience, some reverse movements and interesting sound-effects.

I took some very poor piccies to try and convey some of the essence (NB the following are images of copyrighted scenes belonging to Scottish Ballet taken from my computer screen).

This last image was taken today and so the daylight resulted in reflection
quite a nice effect, I thought!

  7. Thank you Yamini for always broadening our horizons. We haven't been looking far beyond our own walls this year and when we did look out it was to find the familiar and comforting - not to seek out the different or challenging. We had never considered spending time at the ballet.
