Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

Having introduced a variety of harp-like instruments last month, a couple of commenters noted that there seemed also to be a relationship to the lute - which is perfectly true. That also leads one to think of the guitar and I have Mark to thank for reminding me of the mighty Paco Peña. As soon as I read the name in the comment I was given flashbacks to lots of family time, as he was a great favourite of both my parents and whenever Señor Peña was on the telly, it was compulsory watching! I am quite sure many of you will also be familiar. I hope you won't mind that this month I am presenting four performances from the master of flamenco rhythms.

Let us begin with a short and very, very Spanish item - with some narrative to aid your appreciation.

  4. Music is a medium that takes people to a mood inexplicable. I don't know much about Guitar, but enjoyed its rhythm.

Really? You've never heard of Clapping Music??? One of my favourite memories from Edin Fringe Festival 1988 was seeing Steve Reich and his orclapstra... though he originally composed this music in 1972. The Spanish call this palmas and have used it for centuries. Clapping for rhythm has existed for longer than any instrument and is likely what led to drumming. Clapping as a form of approval (applause) was invented by the Romans. Yxx

  6. I love the clapping most of all, they are all truly talented. Mama tried to make required watching of Laurence Welk show when I lived at home, i just dove into my book after closing my bed room door.

  9. THANK YOU! This is the guy that my friend Paul W (aka. Paco Waco) was inspired by to take a year off of work and go to Spain to learn Flamenco Guitar! I have been wracking my brain for months since my son and I had a discussion about Flamenco Guitar music and for the life of me I could only remember the guy's first name was Paco! You ROCK!
