What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.
So fanaticism in any form is dangerous? Is it possible to be 'fanatical' about something without being closed minded to everything else? I suppose that's a question of how you understand the meaning of and use the word fanatical. We know someone fanatical about a particular football team - perfectly reasonable man in all other respects but unable to see the danger we see in the way he conveys 'tradtional rivalries' to his kids.
Hari OM Fanaticism is always qualified by the noun that follows it. This quote makes clear what it is about. You actually answer your own question in that last sentence! To be a fanatic is to be so zealous about something it twists one's thinking. Yes, it can mean the slightly gentler 'obsessive'... but to be obsessive to the point that it causes a problem in life is then still that - a problem. Perhaps in more prosaic terms, one can think of the 'fan'aticism of so many for certain music groups, whereby they live their lives in pure imitation. However, young folk are impressionable in all sorts of ways. In the last week, there was the case of the 21-year old who was 'obsessed' with Fascism... and has been given a sentence of 'read some classics.' Currently, I feel, we lack any high-level, wide-exposure peer models for Tolerance and Love... Yxx
Single minded zeal, to paraphrase the definition. So much truth in those few sentences. I think my days of being zealous about anything are in the rear view mirror. Too much unnecessary energy usage. namaste, janice xx
I love your quotes, both yesterday and today! Thanks so much!

Fanatic can be unsafe value, when use in wrong way.

ReplyDeleteTolerance and love seem to be in short supply in the world these days. We wish there was more of both.
ReplyDeleteI have been feeling many big emotions the past few weeks, and need to work on tolerance.
ReplyDeleteTolerance is fading and true love is waning. Some gimmicks, artificiality and the like in the era of virtual life.
