Menoturals; Saturday Sounds

Now to the Channel-billed Cuckoo. Neither a pretty sound nor, it might be argued, a pretty bird. But it is fairly commonly seen and heard, and I include it because I had one fledging in Maggie's nest one year! I have searched in vain for the photos; they were pre-digital era, and I was sure I had scanned them to a file. But no luck. A shame because I had a classic one with Jade and Jasper looking up the Jacaranda tree to see what all the fuss was about... Poor Maggie and Mr Magpie had the dickens of a time keeping up with the feeding schedule... So yes, this bird is a proper cuckoo in that it lays eggs in others' nests to let them carry the burden of raising the young - usually, though not always, at the expense of their own. Quite the April Fool's prank, wouldn't you say?

  1. Saw my first one in the Botanical Gardens in Sydney. Great bird - unless you are a victimized host species of course.

  2. Not the most melodious call to be sure. The bright blood red eyes are quite startling. What a powerful looking beak.

  8. I love listening here but am so glad it is not in my yard.. wow what a VOICE! I think this one comes under so ugly its beautiful. I like it for that reason, it joins my list of ugly birds I like, vultures, pelicans, I am listening as I type and the silly bird could be used in a horror movie with that scream

  9. Oh dear me...I love the color of its feathers and that is one pop of red eye. I do declare the sound reminds me of how it sounds when a kitty is about to toss a hairball...which is really and truly should be called a hairlog

  10. Hi Yam - a bit squawky aren't they ... but oh I'd love to visit Aus and experience these sounds ... while that red eye could be quite nightmarish - cheers Hilary
