Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

Okay, this month's listenings are coming to you from the sub-continent, India. Each week is a little different and, I hope, refreshing to your ear.

Let us begin with one of the classical ragas, which is learned by all advanced students but equally addressed and adorned by the greatest masters of the various instruments of the classical Indian musical tradition. (Think in terms of Bach's Preludes or Chopin's Etudes...) In this case, we hear Pandit-ji Hariprasad Chaurasia. He is to the bansuri what Sri Ravi Shankar was to the sitar. This is a put-the-earphones-sit-back-relax ten minutes. Close your eyes and be transported to another place, another time...

  6. I had a whole cassette full of Chaurasia's rendition when I was young. I loved the melancholy tunes.
