A glance at American music cannot ignore the huge gospel tradition that rose mainly out of the black communities. Here is a fantastic voice I have only just discovered when searching for these posts...
Not my taste in music, but there is no denying that Mahalia Jackson had a powerful voice and was a force for change in the Civil Rights movement, gaining the support of John F. Kennedy. There is much to admire in this child of slaves. Even typing that makes me shudder. To think that we owned people!
