Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

Having shared some native music of the eastern side of Canada, here is some from the north-west; Inuit Throat Singing. This is a tradition of singing carried out by children and women, almost as a game. The aim is to sing at each other rather than with them, and the one who breaks down into giggles or messes up first loses that round...

  1. These days I find it impossible not to think of airborne virus spread! I see the sweet young women are singing on Baffin Island, one of my childhood fantasy destinations. Although perhaps not because of the music.
    Cheers, Gail.

  3. Hi Yam - that was really interesting ... I wondered how it started - and I must look to see where it was taking place - somewhere where the salmon spawn - I'd love to see the sculpture. Baffin Island to me seems to be in the east ... but Gail could well be right - cheers Hilary

Baffin is the northern and largest island that make up the coastline of Canada - admittedly more central, perhaps, but is part of Nunavut, the abutting region to the Northwest Territories... Yxx

  4. I agree it is interesting but with the background noise of wind, I had a hard time hearing the humming. My ears are OLD and I have the same problems with background music in movies while people talk...

  9. Well that was most unique and quite melodious. I am thrilled to learn about throat singing... it was a win win they both giggled at the same time.
