Menonday Art Vibe: Cruel Times
Two items by Anthony van Dyck which demonstrate his skill at representing animals, particularly horses. The first I particularly liked (do try to biggify it to get a better feel for the pencil work). The second, as stated in the blurb, appears to be a sketch practice taken from the master, Rubens. (You can see the original on Google Gallery.) Undoubtedly, it can be hard for our modern eyes to view this massacre of the furred critters, but again, the skill of the draftwork is what captivates. In some ways, I think I prefer this practice piece by the younger artist over the completed oils of the elder... what say you?

I like how this artist and so many others of his time could portray the life around them so realistically. Dutch and Flemish art appeals to me, since that is my heritage...
ReplyDeleteit fits to this times... maybe it is really true that bad things happen again and again?
ReplyDeletePencil over the completed oil everytime for me - a bit like viewing the underlying structure. There is also a great skill in portraying so much without the aid of colour.
ReplyDeleteBoth paintings are great, the first one is my favorite. Take care, have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteStunning results, even though as you say the subject matter of the second picture is not appealing. And I have trouble drawing a stick bird!
ReplyDeleteWow, van Dyck knows horses!
ReplyDeleteThe paintings are beautiful. I like the first one better than the second.
ReplyDeleteThere's something about these drawings that sets them apart, captures the viewer's attention, holds the viewer in a kind of trance.
ReplyDeleteThe first sketch is very detailed...what talent the artist's mind's eye and hands have
