The history of the song itself is unclear (and it had many titles), but Shirley can certainly claim the definitive version, although many artists have since covered it.

The last May offering is the song used as the theme tune for The Change. I was captivated by it. It turns out the singer, Shirley Collins, is approaching her 90th birthday, and she first recorded the song in the year of my birth, 1959. I will first bring you the latest version, and then the earlier one (although the recording of this piece is from 1964). It's good to hear the difference that age has made to Shirley's voice - and how strong and meaningful it still is. As one who used to sing a great deal and not for maybe twenty years now, it provides a glimmer of possibility...!
