Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

Final offering of birthday composers is Andrzej Panufnik, Warsaw, Poland, 24th of September, 1914.

This one was interesting to me, as it requires a mature musical ear and, like modern art, some ability at interpretation. As part of my mischief here is to present you with some mind-stretching, edification, and challenge, this short piece fits the bill! Some of the longer pieces were, perhaps, gentler, but I really liked the urgency of this one, especially right at the end, which almost brings a smile. There is something about this composer that puts one in mind of Stravinsky - a little echo of the Firebird Suite, perhaps...

  1. I am not quite sure whether I am gripped by intense enjoyment or intense annoyance. I think I need to listen to this a few more times and get my head around it.Your comparison with Stravinsky is spot on, but remember the controversy the first performance of The Firebird Suite caused? People rioted and left the theatre. Clearly, modernism is not appreciate by all. Thanks for challenging us, YAM.

  3. I do enjoy pieces like this. This one reminds me of suspensful scenes music from a 1960s Film Noir!
