Menonday Art Vibe; Hey Ho Arabian

George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweedale, Agriculturist, is the title of this one. Unusually, it is attributed first to Sir Henry Raeburn, an exceptionally well-known artist, and later to Colvin Smith, a rather less familiar name. The reason for this is that Raeburn began the painting, but it remained unfinished until Smith took over the studio at York Place in Edinburgh, which Raeburn had established.

By stating 'agriculturist' in the title, Smith was advertising the status of the subject at the time of completion (Hay being highly regarded in his approach to advancing farming and husbandry). However, as can be clearly seen, Raeburn set out to convey the person of Hay in his Field Marshal status, for he was a soldier of some repute, becoming governor of Madras and the Indian Army.
