What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Menoducational; some interesting things

The snippet on seals two weeks back was popular.  Why not, indeed, for they are beautiful! I don't think I clarified, though, that the picture I took with the sunbathing seal was of the Grey Seal species. The photo which came with the article I pasted, was of the Common (sometimes called Harbour) Seal. It is the one most are familiar with.

Grey seals number only about 400,000 in the world - and about 50% of those are around the UK shoreline and islands. Of that number, some 160,000 are round around the Scottish coasts. This graphic shows the main habitats for the Grey Seal.

By comparison, the Common/Harbour Seal has a much more global spread (with some geographical variation within the species) and only about 5% of the world's population is found around the UK. They are much smaller than the Grey.

Now for some super cute viewing this fine Boxing Day....

  2. Crikey ...... they're really beautiful, aye?? My Mum's got a thing about seals. When she was a little girl she used to always say to her Mum that she wanted to be a seal at Taroonga park zoo when she grew up. She obviously hasn't grown up yet!!
