Menolyrical; Words for Words' Sake

The weather reports recently have been full of news about how cold and WET our summer in UK, and especially Scotland, has been this year. Record low temps and rainfalls. It can be easy to slump into 'blues' about this; but having lived in places where such would be welcome, I know the value of a damp climate too. I was reminded of a poem I wrote in India. It fits for today's thinking.

Monsoonalia

Things to find,
(c) Yamini Ali MacLean
If so kind,
When the rain
Arrives.
Just a few
You can do
As the rain
It drives
From the West
(sometimes East).
Water has things
Its way -
Penetrates,
Seeps and sates,
Holds all in
Its sway.

Drips and drops,
Slaps and slops;
Add these to
Your list -
(c) Yamini Ali MacLean
Runs in ruts,
Flows o'er butts,
Stopped by no
One's wish.
Leaves are torn,
Trunks are worn,
It eats out
All ways;
Rots our cloth,
Drowns the moth,
Lets up not
For days.

New creeks come
Where once none.
Now mud ponds
(c) Yamini Ali MacLean
Abound;
Not slow built,
The swirled silt,
where plant roots
Are drowned.
All or naught.
Monsoon's fraught
With life and
Death ways;
Absolute;
Resolute;
Gives no pass
Away.

The rain must
Do what's just,
Relieving
Drought's woe.
So it is
Yearly fizz
Can be friend
Or foe;
But, without...
Eternal drought.
So all men
Give thanks!
Monsoon strife
Ensures life
With re-freshed
Water tanks.

  6. Having just been on holiday is an area where drought has resulted in catastrophic forest fires, I am feeling happy to be back in our damp Scottish environment. Lovely use of wet words in this poem!
    Cheers, Gail.

  7. How wonderful. Any excess is difficult. I'm looking for some rain here. My pond is drying up. You know how I love it!
    I'm excited to have a new client to keep me out of trouble. An escort for a woman my age (58) into blood transfusion treatments twice a week. Makes one grateful and determined to live a better life... hugs from away xx
