In some drawers, in a cupboard here at the father's house, are many things of mother's still lingering. She has been gone for nearly nine years now. Admittedly, much of it can be useful still.
The little bunch of random embroidery threads did not really jump to mind as having much use at all, however. Until the YAMster started thinking. (Should come with a hazard warning, that.) You see, I have a TENS machine. Rather than the cumbersome box in which it came packed, I wished for a little 'dilly' bag to keep it and the wires together and handy. At first, I'd thought to sew one. Seeing the random threads, though, gave me an idea...
If you know anything about me by now, it is that an idea in the YAMster's head usually has to be put into action in order to prove or disprove its value to life. I had no concept of how to make a bag, but I went for it with a size 2mm hook anyway. Possibly there would not be enough of the thread to complete the task in mind. Who knew? Not me. Had to try though.
Et voila!
It wasn't that there was enough thread - it was that, in completing with a tie, I used exactly - EXACTLY - the amount of thread that was there. All that was left was a two-inch swatch. Mother would be proud of me.
Then, there was the small matter of masks to consider. I did have a piece of material that I was thinking to create one from (and may yet do). However, I got a flash of a thought (Warning! Warning!) about getting creatikul with the crochet again.
Result!
It is a cotton thread, such as one would make face clothes from. Size 5mm hook. I had no pattern, but have since found two that you may like if this appeals to you.
The First is basic but could have a cotton pouch sewn in for a 'filter' (many folk are using coffee filters for the task).
The Second is a pattern I may now try, though my own is not too shoddy!

YAM welllllllllllll done on using some of your mom's threads. Oh to have a itty bitty web cam to see inside your mind's eye. The pouch is happy...such great colors. Your Mask is absolutely 100% the most stylish I have ever seen and I've seen at least 87(000,000) over the last few weeks. And it has a filter yay you!!

I wish I had a hand craft but I have never learned one.
ReplyDeleteGood for you. The bag is so colorful.
ReplyDeleteThat bag is very nice - good creative use of that thread.
ReplyDeleteMom found a pattern for a crocheted maks that can be lined. Now she has to check the big tub of yarn to see if she has some cotton yarn. She knows she has lots of mercerized cotton, but would rather work with regular yarn - it moves along faster:)
Thanks for the pattern links, might have to try those too.

Once again, I'm impressed by your productivity in the face of so much else to attend to.
ReplyDeleteHope the birthday tea went well.
Cheers, Gail.
the mama is talentless at that front... but we have her diy mask in a post this week... it's embarrassing LOL
ReplyDeleteHi Yam - love the tens bag - clever to use up the thread. Then the mask ... I'm hoping to avoid them - having to wash them after every use doesn't impress me ... but I guess we won't be issued with them ... I have scarf-rounds prepared ... so will manage. Take care and now rather wish I could crochet ... all the best - Hilary
ReplyDeleteLovely post and glad to make your acquaintance Yamster. You've come up with some real treasures. Love the bag --especially the colour combination and that mask is pretty good too.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm most impressed about is the composition of that picture--a cool self-portrait indeed.
the mask is perfect and I really like that pouch... talk about meant to be, exactly the thread needed. how cool is that? my mother would be proud of you too. she used to do that with her crochet and if she were here now would make a mask and make MORE.. ha ha
ReplyDeleteWow! Beautiful creations.
ReplyDeleteThe bag is so pretty 💙
You do beautiful work and will get lots of use out of your mask.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bag creation ~ love the colors and the mask is wonderful! Great work!

Way to go, Yam!!! I love your mask..
ReplyDeleteCool beaners. Always great to have spare stuff that can be turned into something useful. namaste, janice xx
ReplyDeleteYour bag looks great. Glad to hear you had just enough thread. It would have been a bummer to run out just before you were done.
