Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

Yesterday marked World Music Therapy Day; the month of March is dedicated to music as therapy, although, of course, music therapy is for every day of the year. I have spoken recently about how art can provide a level of expression not achieved with mere words. The same is absolutely true of music - and in some ways, music is much more accessible than art for those in need of such therapy. As with art, it is also an expression that can be applied and utilised by all age groups. Here's a brief intro;

  1. Good for the soul. Anyone who sings in a choir knows is experiencing the health benefits. We've never needed it more than in recent times.

  3. Spare a thought for those in care homes who experience most music as "noise". I know they are in a small minority but this minority included my mother and to a lesser extent my father (who only really liked Mahler and Richard Strauss - neither whom feature much in music therapy sessions I think!) Both my parents sought refuge in their bedrooms whenever musical entertainment was offered in their care facilities. I'm stating this rather contrarian view as I never see it represented elsewhere! Cheers, Gail.

  4. in my 8 years as a volunteer at a long term nursing home, I saw music soothing the souls of the residents every day. it could be singing or someone sitting at a piano playing. they always had the music in the dining room, and that way those that were not interested could be away from it, like Bertie mentioned above. not everyone loves music. but for those that do it is calming and lifts their spirits. this is a precious video

  6. I love love this video. I brought back memories of seeing my Mama and the other residents at Brighton Gardens
    singing to songs from their childhood.

  8. I made the mistake of playing a Streisand song for Erica last week. It caused her to cry and be sad for quite a while. Professional training is important. namaste, Janice xx
