The first one she mentioned was about the Natural Philosopher Eunice Newton-Foote. Should be a household name, according to Ms Mosse. Why?
Well, Eunice only went and discovered that CO2 retained heat in the atmosphere. Go on, really? Back in the 1850s? Yup. I was so interested in this new bit of knowledge, that I thought you might like to share in it. If you have the time to read a more scholarly article on the life and legacy of ENF, then do click through here. If you want the fun and flirty version of only six minutes, watch this quirky video...
Meanwhile, back in the Hutch, I had hoped to bring you the finished jersey I've been crocheting... however, on working the seams earlier this week, I realised some small adjustments were required. The pattern is designed for the modern female figure that, let's face it, is not the Victorian bulbousness of my own! Need to work on a couple of 'gussets' and a little oxter extension. Nothing much, but it has delayed its appearance. Keep watching, it will be here soon!

Take your time, Yam, but we're looking forward.
ReplyDeleteWaiting to have a look at the design for the modern female.
ReplyDeletethis days is the day te most husband notice when it is over LOL
ReplyDelete"Victorian bulbousness" - what a delicious expression! Better I don't tell any of my friends I admire their Victorian bulbousness, however. I suspect I would be persona non grata in a hurry!
ReplyDeletecant wait to see the finished product. I remember reading somewhere that way back then, women would invent something or write a book and change the name to a male name because women just did not do that... good luck with that now since a lot of babies are now names that are either or.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to watching it!
ReplyDeleteI've met many women who disagree on IWD. Take care!

DeleteIndeed - like any of these 'named days' (mother, father etc) one wonders what is supposed to happen the other 364! Thanks for stopping by Giorgio. Yxx
It's my pleasure! Have a nice weekend.
DeleteYAM you had me hooked when I saw the colorful hooks, of course I'll wait for the next installment.
ReplyDeleteHugs Cecilia
I enjoyed learning about Eunice Newton-Foote and can't wait to see your crocheted creation.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your crocheting. xx
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about IWD too and pondering if it is a good or potentially counter productive initiative. We should surely celebrate women every day, but I guess there are parts of the world where their role and contribution needs to be more fully recognised - or indeed, recognised at all. And if this helps then great and well done - i hope it has an impact.
ReplyDeleteHi Yam - sorry you're feeling not so good at the moment ... take care and recover by looking after yourself. I'm in that state too ... this lady sounds so interesting ... you're a source of lots of interesting information - as well as bringing us new phrases ... bulbous Victoriana ... love it!! Hope this weather turns to Spring soon - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting piece of women's history...I wonder how many other scientific discoveries by women have been assumed by men.
ReplyDeleteI also have a set of those hooks and you're right, they are fab!!
