What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Menorkulating; Tech Talk

Yesterday I mentioned how the MadSnapper and I tend to write to each other behind the blogs... Well, we were swapping notes at the weekend when I suddenly thought, "Why the heck don't we do video chats??!"

So, I emailed Sandra to ask if she would like to do that.

A while later, we were yabbering away like we were sitting in the same room. Donchya jus' love modern technology that allows you to talk this way?

I've been using Google Meet for a few years now, so I had no need of jumping on the Zoom bandwagon. Earlier this year, it was integrated with Gmail as part of that whole levelling out of the Google suite of tools into a more cohesive, interchangeable stable of goodies. It's not a new idea, of course. Still, it is to be remembered that Google began only as a search engine and has been buying out small things and hooking them onto their network (including Blogger!). What they have been doing over the past few years is bringing everything properly together under one banner.

This has meant some nuisances along the way. We know all about that here, don't we? But overall, it is hard to beat when considering the whole thing is free software.

Anyway, Meet appeared on my sidebar back in January rather than having to go search for it. If it is not there for you for any reason, you will likely find it in the add-ons section (far right of the Gmail screen).

It's really easy to use - though you do need to have pre-arranged a time with whoever else is going to be on the meetup, be that just one other or several, so not quite as direct as a phone call or text message - but, then again, it is free!

It was PHUN to be face-to-face with our dear Blogville Bloviator. Is anyone else up for a live natter???

Meanwhile, on my wee sojourn last week, Tigger was grabbing all the F time he could, having sussed that things were changing! When F and Mr B left on Friday, he had a face like fizz. I am pleased to report that it only took one night for him to recognise that I was an adequate substitute and served perfectly good food as well as providing company when he required it.

  1. I've seen the "Meet" logo, and your friendly explanation makes it see much more friendly.

  2. It sure is great when we can "get together" even though we are thousands of miles apart. I've been using Zoom since we all discovered it during the pandemic but I'm always up for connecting any way that works for both involved. That's a lovely crocheted afghan Tigger is sitting on.

  3. I will have a look at that Meet. However both do have to be on Gmail I assume?

No... though one does obviously require to be signed up to Google in order to send out the invites. The invitees can receive the email notification in whatever inbox they opt for. If they, for any reason, do not have a Google profile, they may have to sign a temporary one to enter - just as those of us who are forced to use Zoom have to do. It can be easily removed after if that is the desire. Yxx

  5. I've used Zoom plenty and Teams a bit. Not tried Google Meet but happy too. All seem to be a vast improvement on the overly complicated video conferencing platforms we used at work. (Even by 2019, there could be struggles when numerous participants (all highly qualified engineers and scientists) in three meeting rooms in three different countries were all trying to see reach other and share slides, using yet another new and improved version of the system that no-one had time to get familiar with before they changed it again!)
    Cheers, Gail.

  6. It was PHUN with a capital P... I have not done the zoom thing, but have done the video chat from facebook, and facetime once with my brother and his wife, and once I video called my son phone to phone and totally forgot I am retired and he is not. he answered Hi Mom, I am at work and I hung up quickly. all of this is amazing and now I am playing with AI writer, and just yesterday discovered Edge, the browser of Windows 11 has added AI create a picture from my words. wow! this is phun, if you don't have edge, Google has the same thing on the way as does Chrome

  7. Zoom calls and Google meets saved the day during Covid times. In fact, my poetry performances really took off during then--thanks to this new tech. Now that things are back to normal and most poetry meet-ups happen offline in different cities in India, I miss those days;)

  8. Lucky Sandra got to see Tigger in real time…or did you do this before you came down south? It looks like good fun.
I do the occasional FaceTime with my brother, which is good except for the fact he never (shuts up) or rather never stops talking and I can’t get a word in edgeways.

  9. In my experience with cats, not extensive I will confess, they pretty soon adapt to any human who will stroke them and feed them.

I once tried a video chat with my doctor it finally worked. Now that we have better internet I expect it would be easier...as long as it is user friendly. BOL MOL LOL.
    Hugs to you and Tigger

  15. What a wonderful shot of Tigger and his human...we bet he is enjoying being even more spoiled by his Aunty!

I have used Zoom for meetings, but use Facebook for most "friendly chats". What a fun chat with S that must have been!

  16. You are right about Google. They have been quite successful with integrating most platforms under one roof. Two good platforms they killed are Google Plus and Google Reader. Meet and Duo did become a lot popular during Covid and saved the day for many people separated from one another. Now they have integrated Duo and Meet. The next craze is Generative AI. Though OpenAI and Microsoft took the lead, Google quickly caught up with Bard, and it's quite good, almost on a par with the AI feature on Bing. Both are definitely better than ChatGPT.

  17. Video chats are available through so many apps that there is loads of choice. We mostly use Telegram or Whatsapp. Zoom has been more a work of group meet thing (especially during lockdowns). Glad Mr T is settling ok. Xxx F
