Menoizikuls; Midweek Musicalisms

What better way to mark Summer Solstice than with remembrance of a bright star of yesteryear. June 20th would have been the 98th birthday of Audie Murphy. Remember him? I used to love sitting with my dad watching Audie's movies. It was not, however, until I was working my way through the Sabaton catalogue that I discovered the fact that Mr Murphy was (and remains) the most decorated soldier in US history. The song utilises words from one of Audie's poems, as well as reflecting the actions required at Anzio and gives just a hint at the PTSD which haunted him:
And all along the shore
Where cannons still roar
They’re haunting my dreams
They’re still there when I sleep
You can read the full lyrics HERE. In setting up this post, I also discovered the Audie Murphy Research Foundation website.

As this is 'musicalisms' day, after the history episode, I am also supplying the song video in full, as filmed at one of the many festivals the band have played. Then as a bonus, a song written by Audie Murphy for Dean Martin (another June-born boy). Audie wrote several songs, but this is likely his most famous. It is thought to be a self-reflection based on his first marriage, which failed due to the effects of his 'battle fatigue' (now known as PTSD).

  2. As a youngster I loved Audie Murphy movies. It's been a long time since I've seen one. I was aware of his war record. Thank you for sharing this.

  3. Audie Murphy westerns were definitely not part of my childhood and I never knew about the war hero bit. Information that might come in handy at the pub quiz one evening!
    Cheers, Gail.

  10. Well, my cousin, Judy, purchased the home of Audie's sister over in Greenville, TX. That is the area where Audie Murphy was born. Greenville's main street proudly had a street wide banner proclaiming, "Blackest Land, Whitest People". That was finally removed in the 70s I think. The sign is gone forever but Greenville still honors her son. https://www.heraldbanner.com/news/veterans-remembered-honored-during-memorial-day-weekend/article_d99f373c-fcd6-11ed-8106-27d5bb942a55.html. namaste, janice xx
