What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

This is a quick follow on post to yesterday's, based on some of the responses I got to the mapping thing... rather than responding individually to all.

To be clear, I absolutely knew where I was going; the issue was the lack of information about all the road blockages.

I am a girl guide and navigator of old and adore reading maps. The thing is, for all those Borders roads, I am very familiar - so in terms of direction did not require the talking thing. However... what that thing is supposed to do (and did for some parts) is advise where roadworks are taking place - or, indeed, road closures.

When I crossed from Lanarkshire into the Borders Region council area, this function apparently failed to work, because I hit the worst roadworks delays of the whole journey in three of the towns... and there was NO warning of that road closure that resulted in my having to retrace my route back to Hawick and start again. At least 30, if not close to 40 minutes, lost just on that bit. Aitch, bless 'er, had a search after reading the post and discovered there is a wind farm being built near Bonchester Bridge (down that road), and there were closures for the movements of turbines. But not on that day that she could make out. Sigh... Signage would have been helpful.

I also, while discussing it with her, realised I had overstated - having left New Lanark with an expectation of two hours and forty minutes (ish) of journey ahead of me, plus perhaps a charge stop of an hour, I instead drove almost constantly (or at least sat in traffic) for five hours, and had only one 20-30 minutes stop for a cuppa, sandwich and wind down from all the misdirection.

Oh well; this morning, as you read this, I shall be starting off south again, taking a couple of nights to park up as I work my way towards the Suffolk coast to meet up with the rest of Clan Mac... more on that next week!

Now; strictly speaking, next week is FFF time again - I hope to have something to offer, but you all can have a go for sure!

  3. We have been caught out by construction shutting roads recently...and shutting the diversion too.
Diversions are always designed for the biggest vehicles too, understandably.
    Happy travels x

  6. Hello,
The road closures can be a pain, it is nice to have "real time" maps available. It seems like road work is all over the place here, we just hope the detour signs are well marked. Have fun and safe travels. Take care, enjoy your day and happy weekend!

  7. since we go no where but doctors and food shopping, no road closures in our future. I do know they make travel crazy here though from hearing about it from friends. glad you figured it all out, and you will be able to make adjustments as you become The Traveler! I did look at your youtube channel. I rarely go there so know nothing. I don't even remember how to upload a movie. I need to dive in and figure it out but I have no reason too

  12. Oh, the un-noted blockages! Hubby swears by Waze app to help with timely rerouting. Sometime I just use the old noodle to figure out a way out. I have faith in your inner compass but not warnings by road crews! namaste, janice xx

  14. Yes, road closures can be a pain, and worse, when the map doesn't provide an alert.
