What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Continuing with my history theme for this year - and specifically, Sabaton History Channel offerings - today is delving back into the 17th century and the Battle of Vienna (September 1683). The focus is the inspiration for one of Sabaton's biggest hits, The Winged Hussars Arrive. The song is a real 'ear worm' and, as you'll learn from the short chat after, has raised many a meme. (I also cannot help thinking some winged Hussars could be required to sort out the current conflict over similar territory in Eastern Europe.......)

(Only three more FFFs to go before year-end... am going to have to start researching a theme for 2024. Eek!)

...oooh, want the whole song? Click here to see the live version played in Warsaw.

  1. Really liked this Sabaton History offering. Hard to conceive of a cavalry of 18,000! But I do wonder if playing the song in Warsaw might attract a rather worrying Polish nationalist/far right/anti-Muslim element.
    Cheers, Gail.

... big discussion point, I suppose... engaging the difference between patriotism and nationalism (pride in one's homeland and its achievements versus belief in the superiority of one's homeland despite its errors); and I guess this would no more stir the second over the first than Flower of Scotland does when played in Edinburgh. Pride in one's country is to be encouraged - but there will always be fringe elements who take it too far, and in the end, it will not be music that tips the balance, it will be whatever charismatic leader appears to carry the crowd along. The Empire podcast is currently discussing Russian empirical history, and there was lots of talk about Ukraine and the Russian connection there in this week's broadcasts. There is just so much in history that helps us to reflect more deeply on current affairs! Yxx

  2. how about if we ship Desantis and Trump over there to straigten things out. I will pay the bill if we can get them out of the country. i now wonder what the history books will say about this world we are in today..

Hah! By the looks of things, we could add Ramaswamy to that list... and watch the place go up in flames! I can't help feeling that Modi is slipping under a lot of radars, too... sigh... I think that studying history allows us to become more objective about the moments that we live and appreciate them for being blocks in the same chain... Yxx

  3. My goodness me I know battles have been fought for eons but I sure do wish people could find a way to live in peace.
