Menoturals; Saturday Sounds

Now for one of the most ubiquitous of Aussie birds, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. Depending on your point of view, one of Birdland's great comics or just an out-and-out thug! Back at the Turramurra home, where the Kookaburra Klan of Peter, Piper, Picta, Peesa, Pickled and Pepper were our constant visitors, there were quite often confrontations with the Cockie Crew. This is one picture I took of Peter telling one Cockie what he thought of his attempts at intimidation...

Here is a video with the raucous voice of the S-cC (with a tiny glimpse at the end of another of the Cockatoo family, the Galah).

  1. Such a beautiful and LOUD bird the Cockatoo is. The Dive shop we dove out of in Austin had a beautiful Moluccan that was such a sweetheart most of the time, but when she got upset...she would definitely let you(and the neighoring businesses) know about it!

  3. The Cockatoo is a beautiful bird, what a strange sound he makes. Love the shot of the Cockatoo with the Kookaburra. Great video. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

  4. One of my favourite birds of all time, filled with personality and charm and with a generous helping of mischievousness too. I am always reminded that Sue (Elephant’s Child) calls them Sulphur-crested Vandals, but loves them just the same. The coffee mug I am drinking from now has the portrait of a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo on it, and in my office I have feathers. They are W O N D E R F U L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not exactly what you'd call easy on the ear...

  8. They sure make quite a noise. We've only seen them in pet stores around here.

  9. In our many years of owning pets, we did own a Goffin Cockatoo and a Moluccan Cockatoo. I couldn't stand the screaming noises or the daily "dandruff". They got traded in for an English Bulldog - a much better choice☺

  10. Amazing that a bird which can screech like that is also an accomplished mimic.
