Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

As we float down into the closing weeks, this penultimate month, I continue with the 'heavy' music introductions. All year I have been drawing attention to the classical nature of heavy metal and, occasionally, dipping into the classical to demonstrate the seeds of metal music. What I hope you have noted is that metal often lends itself well to orchestration in the fullest sense.

20th-century music of the concert tradition (as opposed to the 'popular') often reflects heavy themes. This month, I have been finagling the tubular to find some gems of this modern classical era which fit the strident and insistent themes of heavy music.

First, an excerpt from Philip Glass - his 1983 opera, Akhnaten. For an opera, there is limited voice involvement. As is the case of his minimalist style, the music is repetitive and mesmeric; here, it builds and builds with a throbbing undertone - get those earphones on and drift to ancient Egypt! (I encourage you to listen to the full work - it's wonderful background music!)

  4. Maybe its the tinnitis but i struggle with sounds feeling 'close' to my ears (headphones) and tend towards soft sounds in general. I see your point however about potentially mesmeric.

Ironically, it is because of tinnitus that I do better with earphones one - not buds - can't abide buds... YAM xx

  5. It is repetitive...I can almost hear it as background music building up to a mystery being solved.
