Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms
Last week I mentioned mbaqanga music, arising from Zulu traditions. Here are some of the best proponents of the style, The Mahotella Queens. This song was in tribute to their recently departed male singer, Mahlathini, the guitarist, Marks Mankwane, and producer, West Nkosi. The video has a group of youthful dancers representing them in their early years and with fond memories. The group formed in 1964 and are still going. This song's title means, "a human is a human, no discrimination."

Easy to understand how/why Paul Simon collaborated with musicians from this tradition to create some of his most popular and memorable music.
ReplyDeleteThey are terrific!
ReplyDeleteI liked the way they had the younger dancers as younger versions of themselves. A fine tribute.
