Do you like sculpture? Do you have a favourite piece that you have seen?

Welcome to the first of twelve Monday posts featuring some of my favourite works from the National Gallery of Scotland. Each week, you will see the artwork, the label provided beside it and then a few words of mine sharing with you why I've recorded it... you are invited to study the works and the words and then leave your own reflections in the comments. Let us begin!
We start with a sculpture. I am very fond of three-dimensional works, whether made of wood, stone, or metal. Those of you who enjoyed The Jungle Book will recognise the character depicted here. I was attracted to how the bronze almost mimics the look of polished wood. Also, the fact that this was a female artist added interest. I had difficulty getting a photo of any quality through the highly reflective cabinet, so you don't see the lithe length of Khan here. Not quite life-size, it is still an impressive piece, and the crouched pose definitely translated into a sense of movement and power.

Looks quite powerful.
ReplyDeleteAmazing sculpture
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that the sculptor has captured the tiger under threat and ready to attack - the flattened ears and lowered head are an indication of the animal's unease
ReplyDeleteI can tell it is crouched and ready to pounce, even just seeing the face. its absolutely gorgeous! I just read what jablog said and looked again and see what she saw. I would have taken photos of it also... it draws the eye. looking forward to each one you show us...
ReplyDeleteHe is gorgeous and looks very fierce!

Hi Yam - what an amazing sculpture ... love it - and great to know more about it and the sculptor. Over the years I've seen rather a few sculptures ... I don't have a favourite ... what a great post - thank you - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful detail, and I enjoyed reading about Ms Bone! I appreciate all forms of art, but am more of a 2 dimensional art gal(paintings, photography).
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing more!
We thought it was wood until we read the description! What a fierce sculpture.
