Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

Birthday composers continue now with John Field, Ireland, 26th of July. I cannot believe I had not heard of this bloke, given he was a great inspiration to Chopin... for it is Field who is credited with inventing the musical form known as the nocturne! By comparison to where Chopin took this style, Field's works seem almost naive, but one can also hear the experimentation going on as he works from one to eighteen... and this pianist has, this year, released an album in which she performs them all. If you enjoy sedate and soulful piano, this is the stuff for you!

  3. Ironically, I knew of John Field, YAM, but I don’t think I have ever heard his music. If so, I have forgotten, although over the years CBC FM has had a whole range of interesting programmes dealing with some of the more obscure history of classical music, with a range of eclectic, knowledgeable people. Tom Allen continues this tradition to this very day, and who can forget the delightful and esoteric Bob Kerr? In any event, I digress, and this probably means nothing at all if you are not Canadian! The music is absolutely gorgeous, and delightfully played. The foundation of the nocturne may definitely be heard there. I am both grateful and happy that you brought this to us today. Merçi beaucoup et gros bisous de ton ami canadien, David
