I would amend that slightly to 'regularly' keep company… Sometimes you have to spend your energy encouraging the best out of someone you don't necessarily regard as uplifting.
To the quote I'd add, 'as far as possible', to make it a bit more practical! Not all 'the bad' can be cut off. So, the only option is the minimise it to negligible extents; and maximise the good. (My latest post: The city that went back in time)
I can't tell you how many times I messed up and did not keep company with those who lift me up and made a big fat mess of my life. this quote is sooooo true... I wish my mother could see these hydrangeas. hers were blue and she loved this color pink, in fact she had so many dresses in this color, we now call the color Mother Dress Pink
If I followed that adage I would never attend a family gathering again.
