Menoizikul; Midweek Musicalisms

This week, I bring you music from the northwest region of China - a folksong of the Uyghur people (slightly jazzed up!). The Uyghurs have more in common with the Turkish than the Chinese. It is this plus the religion that has caused significant difficulties for them in recent times.

  1. Beautiful music! I wish humans would just stop focussing on our differences and making them an excuse for discrimination and violence...

  2. China is a huge landmass. I have never been there but imagine the gradation of cultural variations across it must be similar to say Europe, with noticeable changes every few miles. The world would be a sad and boring place if humans were all homogenized (but it might be less conflicted - which suggests that a peaceful utopia would be a boring place to exist in). xxx F and Mr T

  3. Wow! Well done for unearthing some Uyghur music and highlighting their distinctive and tragically threatened culture.

  5. It's so sad, what governments do to minorities. You'd think they'd learn!
Music, dancing, costumes, even a translation of the words. I really enjoyed it!

  9. Hi Yam - this is wonderful to listen to and to see them performing. Thanks for the information on the Uyghurs - I hadn't realised the Turkish connection ... I feel so much for all oppressed peoples. Take care - Hilary
