...by 'true religion', Gurudev did not mean a named establishment with dogmas and credos. He was referring to the inner stirrings of the psyche in each of us. That part which seeks to connect, to understand, to share - to Love. One wonders why it is that when gathered together in 'masses', otherwise fair-minded individuals appear to lose their humanity and become a homogeneous lump of lava smothering the life out of all around? Why is it that 'nation' stands for the government in power and that it bears no relation, very often, to the actual will and intent of its people? And it is not about history. It is about the psychological makeup of the human critter...
It takes courage to stand against the tide of populism and to live the principles to which one aspires. To maintain reverence for all even as they attack one is a balance few can manage successfully. Capital 'ell' Love is the raft to which such a personality must cling.

ReplyDeleteAs I move deeper into my 80s, I know that love is what really matters. I see that so clearly now, but then I still have a problems with the masses, particularly when they seem to be from not just another culture, but from a whole other planet. But isn't it wonderful, in a sense, to still be working on oneself, that there's always more to learn?
