This brings me to the focus of today's post here at the host blog for FFF.
As happens when one has formed a connection with blogging, it is sometimes a little difficult to recall quite who visited whom first, or if one just happened upon a spot - or followed an instinct from a comment on another's blog... whatever it is that draws the threads together in this wriggling web, I am daily grateful for the circle of online acquaintance that has built up. Which, indeed, has spilled over in places to outright friendship and even 'in person' meet-ups.
One such connection for me has been with Mark Charlton at Views From The Bike Shed. His life, these days, is centred on writing. He takes it seriously. His posts are not frequent but are, every one of them, a gem to read when they appear. Mark has produced books. Real, hard-print, proper books! All the nascent writers among us can be rightly envious! (Yes, exclamation marks...) The latest outing is a collection of posts taken directly from the blog archives and 'interludes' that ponder the presence and purpose of blogging.
For Mark, it is clear that blogging is a tool to hone his writing chops. Each of us reading here will have our own expectations of our blogs. Most of us have, on at least one occasion (often once a year), wondered what we are gaining from putting ourselves online in this manner. I know that, for me, this was an immediate writing medium that allowed me to experiment with style and format and to 'think aloud', and a look back at much earlier posts sometimes brings a cringe. Then again, seeing how my writing style has developed and become particular to the blogging medium is good. It is different from writing a book. That doesn't mean that one cannot reach to a book in this act of online journaling. Mark is proof of that with his essay-style writing. There is a long and worthy tradition in the publishing of essays. This book is a fitting testament to the connection of blogging to serious writing and getting published. (Click the image to shop for your own copy.)
Why do I encourage you to obtain your own copy (or at least visit Mark's blog)? Simply, your life will be brighter for having done so. With this book, each chapter is a 'post', and if you do as I have done and take just one per day, just before going to bed, you will find yourself with soft thoughts and quite possibly a smile to ease you into sleep. Conversely, reading an episode with one's morning cuppa can give a boost to the day.
I pondered offering glimpses of any favourite parts read thus far... and realised that picking a favourite would belittle all the rest! As far as the writing content goes, to my mind, this book is faultless. It must be confessed that the old proofreader in me did jar at some of the printing errors (words running together, occasional misspells). I am sure these will be tidied up for the next print run - and would emphasise that they are few and in no way distract from the narrative.
Anyone who has blogged themselves or has been a reader of blogs will find much to indulge and revel in from Mark's writings, and I am honoured to count him as a 'blogpal'.

Today it is still thursday here, but I wrote a short poem for my ruffdraft blog. https://ruffdraftsite.wordpress.com/2023/04/27/thursday-morning-2/comment-page-1/#comment-1720
ReplyDeleteAnd I published a piece about my sister hearing a woman in the back seat of her car talking about her life in the 1800s. When she turned around, there was no one there. But from the information she received, she wrote a play that is still being performed. https://findingeliza.com/archives/40655
When look back at my early blog posts I often feel that I am falling off now compared to then.
Today I did not write but posted an optical illusion. A fun make you those but one that’s been ‘bothering me’ because I’ve misplaced the link to where I found it can’t find reference to it online. I really want to discover why it works the way it does
ReplyDeleteI’ve been reading Mikes blog for quite a while now - his posts are ‘simple, yet complex’ about ordinary things, walking, Oscar his dog, coats, spectacles, worldly possessions oh and his rather posh shed. When his latest post pops up I know it’s going to be a ‘sit down and enjoy’ read
Hope you really enjoy your new wheels (when they arrive)
Take care
Cathy
Just popped back to see other comments and realised I misnamed Mark…..why I called him Mike - I’ll never know 😊
DeleteWill it be today for the van?!
ReplyDeleteEchoing Cathy's comments about the qualities of Mark's blog - one always looks forward to his thoughtful, interesting and beautifully written posts.
Nobby has posted an FFF post today. Not fiction, but the episode reported is remarkable enough, I think, to merit a special 'feature'. See:

Cheers! Gail.

ReplyDeleteI totally forgot today is FFF but even if I had remembered, i have lost my ability to write with humor, since the 8th of April vertigo and stress have stolen the desire to write, even when I want to. I treasure my e-friends and reading there blogs but for 6 days could not even READ a blog. I am getting better and hope to be ready for the end of May... will check out the bike shed
ReplyDeleteSorry I forgot today is FFF, here is my MadSnapper post, and it will do I think

Aunty YAM thank you so very much for introducing us to Mark. I will head over today.
ReplyDeleteWay back in 2008 I was a stalker in the world of Pet blogs. Which I had no idea existed.
I finally figured out how to comment on them in spite of not having a blog. My long time friend
Kit, mom to my furry nephews was a blogger at Dog Daze. She shared all the antics of her Labrador Pack,
Buddy, Sassy and Zack. Thru her I found Daily dose of Jack Blog written by his Tall Guy aka TG. Jack was another lab. Both Kit and Tall Guy encouraged me to think about blogging and were so extremely helpful. Madi and I jumped in with all 6 of our feet and never looked back

Another thought provoking post, it has me thinking of the past, present...and future of how I will blog!
ReplyDeleteI will also check out Mark's blog!
So much to nod to in the post Yamini:) Why blog? And the 'cringe' factor at earlier posts--I nodded and smiled a lot as I read along. Looking forward to reading Mark's words. Your sparkling review makes his book and blog a must read.
ReplyDeleteFollowing your suggestion, I'm heading straightaway for that blog.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delight to come across this post - I'm somewhat humbled by its kindness (and that of the other comments), while quietly smiling that my words have touched others. You are right to about some of the printing / proofing errors - and yes, they will be corrected. Thank you again.
