WYSIWYG

What You See Is What You Get. This is a journal blog, an explore-blog, a bit of this and that blog. Sharing where the mood takes me. Perhaps it will take you too.

Menoturals; Saturday Sounds (and a Stop Press; Comments)

Today's bird choice is that of the Cockatiel. These and the Budgerigar (soon to appear here) are surprisingly common outback birds. When one knew of them as pets and cage birds in one's youth, to see them in the wild transforms the thinking!

Still, it has to be said that Aunty Jenny's Cockatiel called Peter (who knows why), was a character and then some. Often permitted to fly free, his favourite trick was to sit on the washing line and remove the pegs! In windy Scotland, that made him a tad unpopular. And entertaining. When it was decided he required a mate, along came Gem. Let it be said that Peter and Gem were not a match made in heaven. With no sign of any nesting tendencies, the pair created quite the mess of not just pegs but curtains, ceilings, and cabinets... Gem was eventually rehomed, and Peter settled back into bachelor life and had the sole attention of Aunty Jenny. Spoiled brat,,, er bird that he was! I don't recall his voice being quite as sweet as these sounds, either. Ear-piercing, more like.

STOP PRESS - RE COMMENTS
As many of you will have noted, this week's Blogger comments have been playing up yet again. The business of the spamming of comments, both current and historical, continues, although somewhat reduced in frequency.

If you had the setup such that you received notification by email of comments on your blogs, that function appeared to cease... then suddenly, one or two still slipped through. It was only by going to one's dashboard or to the blog posts themselves, that we could see who had left a trace of visiting. (I will note here that there are two regular commenters at DoWY whose comments never came through by email for some reason, so I often didn't know you had visited - Molly and Tigger! I wonder if that will change now I've made the following adjustment?)

Anyhowzers... desperation took me burrowing for workarounds. My initial thought was to go to the settings and remove my email notification, then enter it again (which had worked after the big overhaul back in 2020 - remember that fiasco?) Imagine my dismay, then, to discover that one can no longer enter one's address for that request in that section! Why even leave the option there, is my next question?

The usual support network has not apparently picked up on this current situation. However, I opted on Friday just to leave a comment on my own post and tick the 'notify me' box before publishing it - which worked. For that post.

Persistence paid off, though, and experimenting with another part of the settings has proven to be the answer. Go to your dashboard;
settings > page down to the 'email' section > select 'pending comment notification emails' > enter your email address.

You will receive a notification in your inbox inviting you to 'subscribe' to these email notifications. Choose to subscribe, and it will confirm that on a separate tab. THIS WORKS! Comments that were placed after that alteration came through to email promptly.

Now if we could only sort out that spamming nonsense... sigh...

UPDATE ON "THE GREY"
For my van supporters, the news is not brilliant. Though some minor movement, insofar as the invoice came through yesterday, and I have commenced payments. However, the government department responsible for authorising the Electric Vehicle grant that is provided on commercial vehicles (even though I am private, it's a van, so...) has been dragging the chain. It is out of the dealer's hands as well, and we just have to play the patience game. Send up your requests to whatever higher power you choose that I am on my wheels before too much longer! If it doesn't manifest before next Thursday, I am going to have to wait until the end of May due to an impending rather large trip - about which you will read in due course. 😎

  1. I used to have a cockatiel when I lived in San Francisco. His name was Diego and I had taught him how to say some words; he knew his name. I let him free when I came home, with the window close. But one day a friend came and opened a window and Diego flew out. He landed on top a tall palm tree. I called him and he responded but he never came down, and finally flew away. I was sad for weeks.

Like all of the parakeet species, they have such character! I always did wonder that Peter never flew away. He clearly was devoted to my aunt... Yxx

  3. Those cockatiels are a noisy bunch.
Frustrating about the van delay - so near and yet so far.... I do hope the vehicle grant comes through early next week.
    Cheers, Gail.

  4. is there anything on this earth that goes smoothly when we try something new? I don't think so, prayers for the van snaffu to get itself straight for you, although dealing with any govt. on any thing is usually a hassel, all over the plantet.
the fix you mentioned is the one I have used over the past year, but this time when I tryed to add it said error it is already there. this morning I am getting emails again without the notify, which worked well yesterday. I still have 3 that don't come through but have not for a long time. so far today all have come through, including your comments.
I too have heard cockatiel pet birds that are NOT music to the ear, like the sound bite above. they sound like sweet songbirds. I am claustophobic and have never been happy with caged birds or fish in a bowl....

Maybe the fix was just coincidental to Blogger sorting itself out. Oh, the mysterious mayhem of the intermutts! Oh well... Yxx

  5. Hello,
The Cockatiels are so pretty, I would love to see them in the wild. I like noisy birds, they have a cute sound. I am not a fan of caged birds, they should be free. Sorry to hear that your van is being held up, I hope it all works out soon. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

  6. I had always hoped to find Cockatiels and Budgerigars in their natural state in Australia, but I was never in their habitat unfortunately. I am not really surprised that delivery of your van is being delayed. That seems to be normal these days. It will be all the sweeter when you get it however. Maybe you'll get a Cockatiel to ride on your shoulder!

  7. The cockatiels do sound very sweet...when singing in harmony they compliment one another...alone they sound a bit like me and I cannot carry a tune in a bucket.
OMCs OMDs spam folder has been driving me bonkers. I am getting comment notices sent to it from 2011. Last two nights I have deleted close to 50.
Now off to try your fix.
    Hugs Cecilia
PS I had no idea about your van had to be approved by the powers that be...good luck

  10. I haven't had too much trouble commenting as of late. A couple still register as questionable.
    I hope I don't jinx it!
I used to get emails of comments, but now I find it simpler not to. It is tough to complain about a free service, methinks.
Good luck on the rebate. Governments move pretty slowly. Sorry about that.
I anxiously away your next adventure. XX

  11. Our vet used to have a cockatiel in their office. He was a bit shy but loved to whistle at the ladies. LOL!

  14. F's nephews had one of those birds as a pet some years ago - messy and obstreperous. It threw stuff out of its cage, messed all over the place when allowed out to fly around, and attacked people. It steadfastly refused to do any of hte immitating that they are supposed to be good at. Then one day it flew away - maybe it found a better home who knows. That is a real pain about your van. The van gods have some other plan for you right now. We wonder what it is.... Furrings and purrings Mr T

  15. Cockatiels seem so exotic to me - but I know nothing about pet birds, though my neighbour has a parrot. It seems to me they shouldn't be caged.
